On the 20th of November the world celebrates Universal Children’s Day. This day is dedicated to promoting the welfare of the world’s children. The Early Education Centre hosted a Universal Children’s Day event on the 17th, to teach children about their rights and responsibilities. The children had a blast with fun, games, and treats.
Universal Children’s Day
In 1954 the United Nations General Assembly recommended that all countries join together in celebrating a Universal Children’s Day. A day where countries could promote global togetherness, create awareness of the problems that children face, and improve the welfare of all children. The theme for 2022’s Universal Children’s Day was: Inclusion, for every child. The theme centres around ensuring that every child’s needs are met, no matter their background.
The day is celebrated on the 20th of November to coincide with the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. In South Africa the day is celebrated on the first Saturday of November.
The programme
The Early Education Centre joined in the celebration of Universal Children’s Day with an event hosted at Cloetesville Park. The programme is one of many that The Early Education Centre provides to assist the Cloetesville community. The event hosted 39 children for an evening of fun, games, and learning.
After welcoming the children and addressing the rules of the event, the children received a talk from social worker, Lisa Fortune. She taught them about their rights and responsibilities and why this day is celebrated. She also talked to the children about the 17 universal goals.
After Lisa spoke to the children, they faced off in a tug-of-war between the boys and the girls. Next, they enjoyed an obstacle course where they challenged one another. Tired from the games, the children were treated to some delicious ice-cream and strawberries, generously donated by Zetlers. The children also received lucky packets to enjoy.
A helping hand
Events like these would not be possible without the help and support of others. The Early Education Centre would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who participated. A special thanks to our teec team for your unwavering contribution and to Zetlers for sponsoring the delicious strawberries.
Everyone enjoyed a great day at The Early Education Centre’s Universal Children’s Day event. The Early Education Centre hopes to continue its contributions to children’s welfare and education.
